Secret Lives of Charles Lindbergh - The Lindbergh Nobody Knew
When Charles Lindbergh died in Maui in 1974—by then an environmentalist so dedicated he refused burial with any article of clothing that might contaminate the earth—there seemed little new of consequence left to discover about the once world-celebrated aviator who had, at age 25, made the first solo flight from New York to Paris back in the ’20s. The “Secret Lives of Charles Lindbergh” (Monday, 9-10 p.m. EDT, on the National Geographic Channel) provides documentary material that argues otherwise, and then some.

Aviator Charles Lindbergh, the subject of National Geographic’s revealing documentary.
.If those proofs are credible—and they seem to be, given the inclusion of a cache of some hundred letters from Lindbergh himself—they would do little to alter Lindbergh’s place in history, such as it is, or the ineradicably squalid image of this briefly golden hero who would, not long after that pioneering flight, become one of the country’s foremost proponents of racist ideology, particularly impassioned in arguments that the white race must be preserved, unsullied. He was a vocal admirer of Hitler’s Germany—in particular, of the glories of its social order, efficiency and devotion to the ideals of race purity. Though he would never allow, the length of his life, that there might be any reason for him to regret his bedazzled regard for the Nazis—a regard still apparently so tender, after the war, that he found the Nuremberg war crimes trials intolerable: a proof, as he announced at the time, of America’s vengefulness against Germany—he came, in his later years, to a seeming broader view on other matters. He became an enthusiastic visitor to Africa, interested in indigenous tribes, even as he was becoming less enthusiastic about aviation, once his life’s passion. He had become a kind of true believer now in the faith that machines were destroyers—enemies of the natural world.

The secrets this film divulges testify to still broader views of an entirely different kind than the sort that his early history might suggest. From the time he came to the attention of the world at age 25, down through his years of fame and, finally, semipariah status, the Lindbergh persona remained, consistently, that of an ascetic of sorts, with a touch of the puritanical about him. From the evidence put forward by the filmmakers, Lindbergh in fact lived an extraordinarily active romantic life, particularly in the period beginning in 1957 and extending nearly till his death.

.Lucky Lindy (as he hated being called) had, by the time that period ended, fathered a total of seven children by three different German women (in addition to the five he had fathered by Anne Morrow Lindbergh). The score card is impressive, the orderliness of these arrangements beyond anything a film writer might have conceived, including the setup in “The Captain’s Paradise” (1953), in which Alec Guinness portrays a serene master of only two separate families. According to one of the adult children, their father, whom they understood to be an important businessman, had time to visit only a few times a year, as their mother explained to them when they asked questions. Still, we’re given to understand, he was a most devoted father during those few days. Lindbergh’s American children apparently had a similar sense of his dutifulness as a father, though one considerably darkened by the burden of his stringent, unyielding demands on them during their childhood.

The film points to the results of positive genetic tests as proof of the claims of Lindbergh’s three other families, as well as the letters in the hands of the children. On his deathbed, Lindbergh wrote farewells to them promising that they would be taken care of, and urging that they continue to maintain the utmost secrecy. It is, at the least, a curious chapter in the Lindbergh saga—the man so determined that the genes of the white race must be preserved had in the end, perhaps, found a way to contribute to the cause. One of those European sons, indeed, recalls that the man they claim as father had always urged them to be sure to have children so that their genes would be passed on.

All this remains, ultimately, a footnote to the larger drama of the Lindbergh story—a fact the filmmakers apparently recognize. The best of this documentary, packed with eloquent period pictures, concerns the Lindbergh of that prewar era of his flight, his fame, the chaos that followed the kidnapping of his son—and his dizzyingly quick and permanent fall into disrepute. That evidently came as a great surprise to Lindbergh, who could never quite understand what was so offensive in his devotion to the Reich, his acceptance of a Nazi medal, his denunciation of aid to a beleaguered England, his campaign to preserve the white race, and his charges that the unduly influential Jews were trying to take the country to war.

One of the film’s commentators observes, with captivating succinctness, how strange it was, after everything, that Lindbergh would continue to express amazement about these things. Decades after the notoriously ugly 1941 speech he gave in Des Moines, Iowa, charging that President Franklin Roosevelt, the British and the Jews of America were dragging the country to war—the speech that well and truly finished him, which caused overnight mass resignations from America First organizations and editorial denunciations from even the most isolationist sectors of the American press—Charles Lindbergh still complained that nobody had paid attention to the rest of his speech. That he may have found peace and satisfaction in the creation of a few extra families—in Munich, Baden-Baden and Switzerland, respectively—each grateful to see him whenever he popped in, seems, for a man with so complicated a relation to reality, not entirely surprising.

Oh! Calcutta ¡

Reviewed By: Angus Wolfe Murray
Read Angus Wolfe Murray's Film Review of Oh! Calcutta!

Cast Biographies don't cut the mustard. This was an historic moment in the history of British theatre, when censorship was ridiculed and sex became a laughing matter. And yet the DVD extras provide nothing. A sorry omission.

Resurrecting Kenneth Tynan’s soft porn stage sensation of the Seventies as a DVD (without extras) in the sexually liberated Noughties is an odd one. For a start, this is theatre which, by the fact of its age, cannot fail to feel dated. For seconds, it was filmed in 1972 when Hair was considered cutting edge.

Let’s be fair, the actors do well. They feel comfortable naked although, considering the faux eroticism and simulated intercourse on display, the guys demonstrate immaculate restraint in controlling the blood vessels in their (no longer) private regions. The gals work hard to stimulate a response, even a standing ovation, without success, which only emphasises the charade.

Devised as a series of sketches, written by such luminaries as Jules Feiffer, Sam Shepard and John Lennon, and interspersed with balletic interludes in the buff, the show must have knocked the knickers off repressed theatregoers, already unzipped by the myth of the Sixties with its rumour of free love, happy baccy and velvet flares. It played in cities throughout the world, breaking box office records and may now be considered the Mamma Mia! of its time, which only goes to show that after the orgy we have returned to an age of innocence.

The sketches are parodies of What The Butler Saw, titillating sexual fantasies taken a little further and given unexpurgated dialogue to shock the audience into nervous laughter. There is a nasty rape scene in a nursery, an incident of Victorian sadism that backfires, a lazy Southern sittin’-on-the-porch kinda chewin’ the fat between a father and son that degenerates into detailed descriptions of the horizontal jive, a sex experiment in a lab (nurses aflutter), a swingers evening between a rookie couple and experienced fornicators that ends with a premature ejaculation gag and four guys masturbating to images of big tits, except the new bloke can only get off on a picture of Roy Rogers – where’s Trigger?

Oh! Calcutta stretches the boundaries, or did then. It is neither art, nor theatre. It’s like pulling down your shorts behind the school gym because Pauline Richards said she would kiss you on the mouth if you let her look. She didn’t. She ran away laughing.

You might run away, but you won’t be laughing.

Andrea Mohin/The New York Times

Merce Cunningham in his company’s studio in the West Village in 2008.Merce Cunningham, the American choreographer who was among a handful of 20th-century figures to make dance a major art and a major form of theater, died Sunday night. He was 90 and lived in Manhattan.

Mr. Cunningham ranks with Isadora Duncan, Serge Diaghilev, Martha Graham and George Balanchine in making people rethink the essence of dance and choreography, posing a series of “But” and “What if?” questions over a career of nearly seven decades.

He went on doing so almost to the last. Until 1989, when he reached the age of 70, he appeared in every single performance given by his company, Merce Cunningham Dance Company; in 1999, at 80, though frail and holding onto a barre, he danced a duet with Mikhail Baryshnikov at the New York State Theater. And in 2009, even after observing his 90th birthday with the world premiere of the 90-minute “Nearly Ninety,” at the Brooklyn Academy of Music he went on choreographing for his dancers, telling people as they went to say farewell to him that he was still creating dances in his head.

In his final years he became almost routinely hailed as the world’s greatest choreographer. For many, he had simply been the greatest living artist since Samuel Beckett.

He had also been a nonpareil dancer. The British ballet teacher Richard Glasstone maintains that the three greatest dancers he ever saw were Fred Astaire, Margot Fonteyn and Mr. Cunningham. He was American modern dance’s equivalent of Nijinsky: the long neck, the animal intensity, the amazing leap. In old age, when he could no longer jump and when his feet were gnarled with arthritis, he remained a rivetingly dramatic performer, capable of many moods.

International fame came to him before national fame. In due course he was acknowledged in America as one of its foremost artists, but for a time his work was known here only in specialist dance, art and music circles. Not so in London, Paris and other cities. There he was widely celebrated as the creator of a new classicism, as Diaghilev’s successor, as one of the most remarkable theater artists of his day.

And it was in Europe that he was most acclaimed right through to this decade, with sold-out Cunningham seasons in Paris at the Théâtre de la Ville or the Opera.

Yet he was always a creature of New York. Close to the founding members of the so-called New York Schools of Music, Painting and Poetry, Mr. Cunningham himself, along with Jerome Robbins and the younger Paul Taylor, led the way to founding what can retrospectively be called the New York School of Dance.

These choreographers both combined and rejected the rival influences of modern dance and ballet, notably the senior choreographers Martha Graham and George Balanchine. They absorbed aspects of ordinary pedestrian movement, the natural world and city life. They tested connections between private subject matter and theatrical expression. And they re-examined the relationship between dance and its sound accompaniment.

With Graham and Balanchine, they made New York the world capital of choreography; and the New York School influenced the world in showing how pure dance could be major theater. Many of the dancers who passed through Mr. Cunningham’s company — notably Mr. Taylor and Karole Armitage — went on to be prestigious choreographers themselves. Many other choreographers, notably Twyla Tharp and Mark Morris, paid tribute to his influence.

With his collaborator and life partner John Cage, Mr. Cunningham’s most celebrated achievement was to have dance and music composed independent of each other. His choreography showed that dance was principally about itself, not music, while often suggesting that it could also be about many other things as well.
A slide show of his life and career is here.

Rickey, Rice take rightful place in Hall

baseball hall of fame induction 2009, baseball hall of fame induction, baseball hall of fame induction ceremony, cooperstown ny, hall of fame

y Ian Browne and Mychael Urban / MLB.com

07/26/09 2:28 PM ET

COOPERSTOWN, N.Y. -- Rickey Henderson and Jim Rice officially stood on the same stage as baseball's all-time greats on Sunday, taking their rightful place among them as the newest inductees into the National Baseball Hall of Fame.

As droplets of rain turned into drizzle at times at Clark Sports Center in baseball's historic burgh, the two left fielders -- the quintessential leadoff hitter Henderson and the quintessential power man Rice -- shared the stage for the annual ceremony with 50 members of the Hall of Fame.

And that's where they belonged, as Rice and Henderson gained induction in baseball's hallowed Hall of Fame, along with former Yankees and Indians second baseman Joe Gordon, who was honored posthumously. With broadcaster Tony Kubek and sportswriter Nick Peters also receiving honors for their achievements, the ceremony rolled on through the threatening skies and once again became a beacon of light into baseball's grand history.

And there stood Rickey, smiling that familiar smile, and Rice, smiling a newly familiar smile almost never seen on the field, among the greats literally and officially.

With Henderson dressed splendidly in a white suit reminiscent of his playing days with the A's and Rice in a dapper suit with a colorful tie, they fit right in with the other 50 members of the club to which they now belong.

Those 50 members in attendance were given their due at the outset of the ceremony, with longtime broadcaster George Grande listing them from Goose Gossage and Dick Williams back through time, through the Big Red Machine, through Hank Aaron and Willie Mays and finishing off with a flourish with Bob Feller, the great player and military man.

Then Kubek, the Yankees player and broadcaster who also brought the game to a national TV audience, was honored with the Ford C. Frick Award. Peters, who covered the Giants and A's for decades, was honored with the Taylor J. Spink Award.

As the first inductee to the Hall of Fame honored, Gordon was represented by his daughter, Judy Gordon, in the ceremony honoring him decades after his playing and managing career came to an end. And Judy brought her speech in his honor to a poignant conclusion, discussing her father's death in 1978.

"He insisted against having a funeral, and as such we consider Cooperstown and the National Baseball Hall of Fame as his final resting place to be honored forever," Judy Gordon said.

Elected by the Veterans Committee in recognition of an 11-year playing career with the Yankees (1938-43, 1946) and Indians (1947-50) that was interrupted by his service in World War II, Gordon made nine trips to the All-Star Game, won five World Series rings and was named the American League's Most Valuable Player in 1942 -- beating out Ted Williams, who won the AL Triple Crown.

Then the two stars of the day took center stage.

Henderson brings the all-time runs and steals records with him into Cooperstown's museum, along with one of the more intriguing. A Gold Glove left fielder, a 10-time All-Star, the 1990 American League MVP, and the AL single-season leader in stolen bases 12 times, Henderson had amassed 3,055 hits with a .401 on-base percentage, 297 home runs and 1,115 RBIs.

Rice was a .298 career hitter with 382 home runs, 2,452 hits and 1,451 RBIs in 16 seasons. He had four seasons of more than 200 hits, led the AL in home runs three times, RBIs twice, once in hits, twice in slugging percentage, was the AL MVP in 1978 and was an eight-time All-Star.

For Henderson, the wait for his first-ballot entrance to the pantheon of greats was more a matter of getting him to stop playing to start his Hall of Fame clock. For Rice, the wait was taken to the wall as big as the Green Monster, all 15 years a player is allowed to stay on the Baseball Writers Association of America ballot.

And with Rice's induction, and fitting with the theme of history spanning across generations, the link was complete from Ted Williams to Carl Yastrzemski to Rice.

"Fifty years of Hall of Fame left fielders for the Red Sox," ceremony emcee Grande pointed out.

USA vs. Mexico -- The Gold Cup Final

USA vs. Mexico -- The Gold Cup Final

The U.S. and Mexico face off today in the CONCACAF Gold Cup Final. Today's match, which will be the second consecutive Gold Cup Final between Mexico and the States, is the first of two U.S. - Mexico clashes in a span of 17 days. The second match, which is a World Cup Qualifier, will take place on August 12th at Estadio Azteca in Mexico City.

Today's match (2 p.m. on FSC/TeleFutura at Giants Stadium) is the third straight final for the Americans and they will be looking to take home the Gold Cup for the third time in a row. Mexico will certainly provide a tough test for the States - 'El Tri' certainly has more first teamers on their squad than the U.S. does - but no doubt Bob Bradley will have his guys ready.

Check out highlights of the 2007 Gold Cup Final above (by the way that game was played at Soldier Field...) and use this post as your forum for any comment you may have on today's match.

My prediction? I think today is the day that Mexico beats the U.S. in America. I'll say 2-1 to 'El Tri' with the Mexicans snatching a late goal to get the win.

Erin Andrews peephole tape torrent

Erin Andrews peephole tape torrent

We had rather hoped that this hype over the Erin Andrews peephole video link would have died down by now. But no, search variations like "Erin Andrews peephole tape torrent", and "ESPN peeping Tom" seem still be be dominating the hot searches on Google along with the older Erin Andrews video and the like.

The reason we had hoped it would die down is not over any concern for Ms. Andrews, at least not at this stage. Rather, it's a concern for those people doing the searching.

Any legitimate site with an actual copy of the peephole video soon becomes a target for the ESPN lawyers who rapidly make the site take down the video of Erin Andrews.

Which means that any site still up is not a legitmate site. In the interests of checking this out I looked on YouTube and found a site that at least purported to offer said nudie tape. Making sure that my computer was properly protected against viruses I went further (purely in the interests of reportorial research, you understand). The YouTube video stated that the site would not allow fully nude video, so I would need to go to another site, called, in this case, celebuck. (There are hundreds of these sites so the name is not all that important.)

On trying to click on what they purport is the Erin Andrews peephole video, what do you think happened? Yes, they told me I must download a new toolbar. Mhm Hmm, a new toolbar, from a site that no one has ever heard of, offering illegal access to a nudie video? What do you think would happen next?

Yes, exactly, the site tried to download a Trojan into my computer so that it could steal my passwords, do some keylogging and in general make it their PC not my PC.

So folks, might we make a suggestion? Simply stop looking for this Erin Andrews video. There are no legitimate versions of it out there or if there are, they are completely swamped by sites using it as an excuse to infect your computer with a virus. Far better for you to be off looking for something else.

Comic-Con: Full 'Iron Man 2' Panel Report

Comic-Con: Full 'Iron Man 2' Panel Report

Posted 1 minute ago by Splash Page Team in Comic-Con, Marvel, News, Video
By Terri Schwartz
"Iron Man 2" director Jon Favreau was nice enough to give the entire Comic-Con audience a heart attack Saturday afternoon in San Diego by showing two minutes of behind-the-scenes footage from the film. However, it took Robert Downey Jr.'s support and a quick round of happy birthdays to Favreau's son Max to get the real footage shown.
For those not interested in spoilers, skip the bulk of this piece, but for those of you who want an extensive walkthrough of the footage shown, continue reading!

In the second appearance of the Randy's Donuts shop on film today (the first being in Roland Emmerich's disaster flick "2012"), the "Iron Man 2" clip opened with Downey as Tony Stark in full costume, chilling in the famous donut statue and eating a box of frosteds. The crowd went nuts as the back of an eye-patched head came into view and Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury announced, "Sir, I'm going to have to ask you to exit the donut."
Inside Randy's Donuts, Stark and Fury have a discussion about Iron Man joining forces with the group Fury is assembling (The Avengers). "What if I told you I don't want to join your super-secret boy band?" Stark asked Fury, who responded by saying Iron Man going solo didn't seem to be working out so well for Tony Stark.

"I'm sorry, I don't want to get off on the wrong foot," Stark responded. "Do I look at the patch or the eye?"
The next scene showed Tony Stark in a court room arguing over whether he is obligated to turn in his suit, which was being labeled a weapon.
"It's a high-tech prosthetic," Tony said. "That's actually the most apt description I could make of it."
When the senator demanded Tony turn over the Iron Man to the people of the United States, Stark reiterated, "I am Iron Man. The suit and I are one. To turn over the Iron Man suit would be to turn over myself which is tantamount to indentured servitude or prostitution depending on what state you're in."
The first shot of Don Cheadle as Col. James Rhodes is seen as he approaches the bench against Tony. "Didn't expect to see you here," Tony said in an unhappy tone. He turned to the audience assembled in the court room, declaring, "The point is, you're welcome, I guess -- because I'm your nuclear deterrent."

"I have successfully privatized world peace," he added. "What more do you want?"
A medley of clips follow, showing Whiplash making his own suit, the first shots in the clips of Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson) and some moments of Tony with Natasha Romanoff, Black Widow's alter ego. The clips are narrated by Mickey Rourke, who was unable to attend the panel but is playing Whiplash/Ivan Vanko in the film.
"You come from a family of thieves and butchers," Rourke narrated, "and now like all guilty men you try to rewrite your own history and you try forget all the lives the Stark family has destroyed. There will be blood in the water."
The series of clips ends with a clear shot of Whiplash in full get-up (the screen shot that has been circulating the internet of Rourke), spinning his electrically charged whips around while walking towards Tony Stark on a race track. Tony's race car lies demolished behind Whiplash, while Tony lies bloodied and torn on the ground.

The next scene switched to a fight between Iron Man and a mysterious assailant in midair, but the editing was hard to follow so it wasn't clear what was happening beyond Iron Man's evasive maneuvers and the shots being fired at him.
The screen faded to black, which allowed the audience to cheer, but then a military hangar was shown. Inside the hangar, Rhodes is shown talking with Sam Rockwell's Justin Hammer, both of them looking at an iron suit.

"What did you do? What did you do?" asked Hammer excitedly. "It's classified," responded Rhodes coldly. "Is this what I think it is?" responded Hammer before showing Rhodes a range of heavy artillery.
"Give me something. You're like a sphinx; I can't read you," begged Hammer while Rhodes reviewed the guns. Rhodes said he would take all the weapons, and the final shot of the clips is War Machine in full-suited glory, hovering in the sky, shooting guns off in all directions.
Marvel Studios chief Kevin Feige, Jon Favreau, Robert Downey Jr., Don Cheadle, Scarlett Johansson and Sam Rockwell all made an appearance at the Iron Man 2 Hall H panel, with a surprise guest in the form of "Iron Man" scribe Bob Layton. Downey and Favreau pulled Layton up from the front row to join them on stage.

"They were kind enough to invite me onto the set a few days ago and treated me like I was visiting royalty," Layton said of his experience with the "Iron Man" films.
During the Q&A session that followed, Johansson was very vocal about her desire to get the role of Black Widow, said Favreau. When asked about her audition process, Favreau replied, "Did you bump your f---ing head? Her audition is her body of work."
She also discussed her desire to do her own stunts, and how most of the action seen in the film of Black Widow is Johansson's work.

Malibu Shark Attack, Fango spoke to longtime New Zealand producer Dale Bradley, who tackled his first job in Australia with MALIBU SHARK ATTACK, a killer-fish film that lensed in Queensland under the title GOBLIN SHARK ATTACK and premieres on the Sci Fi Channel (which co-produced the movie, and is soon to be known as Syfy) this summer. Bradley passed on a couple of production pics (see them below), and explains the flick’s odd original moniker.

The onscreen predators “are based on a species called goblin sharks [see art at bottom], which don’t look like your normal great white,” Bradley tells us. “They’re very fearsome-looking creatures. Ours are actually larger than the real thing, but modeled on them for the look that the CG company created. People do catch these things, but ours are monsters that get released from a big underground cavern during a seaquake. The resulting tsunami washes them ashore. Not only do car parks and basements get flooded, but we have sharks inside the buildings as well.

There’s a recipe for something cool there.”This production, whose plot is quite similar to that of the subsequently announced Russell Mulcahy project BAIT (see item here) stars local-born LA FEMME NIKITA star Peta Wilson as lifeguard heroine Heather. Her fellow cast members include Warren Christie, FINAL DESTINATION 3’s Chelan Simmons, BLOOD ANGELS’ Sonya Salomaa, Rachel Barton, Remi Broadway, Jeff Gannon and UNDEAD’s Mungo McKay. The director is BLOOD OF BEASTS’ David Lister, with previously announced helmer Brian Trenchard-Smith remaining on board as a producer.“The central characters are lifeguards on Malibu Beach,” Bradley explains, “who survive the wave but get trapped under their building.

The sharks know they are there and break in. There’s another great location—a construction site that’s also flooded—and the survivors manage to escape there, thinking it’s safe. But next thing, the sharks bash down the roller doors and swim inside, so they’re trapped in the basement. We’ve got a bit of ALIEN in there, and some good mayhem: amputations, people chopped in half. We shot one today featuring some lovely prosthetic work by makeup artist Sharon Robberts where a guy has lost both his legs. We’ve got another scene that’s a bit of a homage to JAWS 3-D, where a parasailor gets into all sorts of trouble and ends up being half the man he used to be.”

Sugar Ray Leonard

Sugar Ray Leonard

Sugar Ray Leonard (born Ray Charles Leonard on May 17, 1956) is a retired American professional boxer. Named Fighter of the Decade for the 1980s, he is widely considered to be one of the best boxers of all time, winning world titles at multiple weights and engaging in contests with such celebrated opponents as Wilfred Benitez, Thomas Hearns, Roberto Duran and Marvin Hagler. He was named after the singing legend Ray Charles. Leonard was given the nickname “Sugar” by his wife Juanita Wilkinson.

Before he was 20, Leonard had won three National Golden Gloves titles, two AAU championships and the 1975 Pan-American Games crown. Leonard earned a spot on the 1976 Olympic team, which included future heavyweight champions Michael Spinks and his brother Leon. Leonard, up to that point in his amateur career, had lost only five fights, among them a contested bout in 1974 against Kazimierz Szczerba of Poland.

A lot of amateur boxing observers thought that the great Cuban knockout artist Andres Aldama would defeat the 20-year-old Leonard in the Olympic final. Aldama was virtually a pro and had scored 5 straight knockouts to reach the finals. Leonard brought Aldama to his knees with a left hook to the chin. Twice during the final round, the referee had required Aldama to take a standing eight-count to prove that he was able to continue the fight. Although Aldama persisted in the match, Leonard emerged the victor by a 5-0 decision and won the gold medal for the United States. It was Leonard’s 145th victory as an amateur boxer.

After winning the Olympic gold Leonard announced to the press, “The journey is over, the dream fulfilled” and he retired from boxing, telling the public that he wanted to go to college. Leonard had hoped to cash in on endorsements but they never came. With the bills piling up and sickness in his family he decided to turn professional.

Looking at Black America, Eyes Fixed on the Future

Looking at Black America, Eyes Fixed on the Future

By NEIL GENZLINGER
Published: July 21, 2009
The first half of “Black in America 2,” a two-night special on Wednesday and Thursday on CNN, begins with a segment in which Soledad O’Brien, the reporter for the series, admonishes some boys in Bushwick, Brooklyn, who ignore their academics to play basketball all day.

Good; the unrealistic dream of pro ball as the ticket out of poverty needs to be knocked down. Of course, Ms. O’Brien’s scolding would be more convincing if the next night’s episode did not included a lengthy piece about Tyler Perry. So, kids, let’s review: Don’t aspire to play pro basketball; you’ll never make it. Instead count on becoming a movie star/entertainment mogul.
So it goes in this skim-the-surface program, a follow-up to “Black in America” last year. Wednesday’s installment is devoted to “Tomorrow’s Leaders” and Thursday’s to “Today’s Pioneers,” but both are essentially collections of upbeat features, anecdotes without much analysis as to whether these piecemeal efforts are making a long-term difference. The message to viewers is, in effect: “See? Someone in California is helping inmates transition back into the workforce when they’re released, and Chris Rock’s wife is taking those Brooklyn kids on a trip to South Africa to broaden their perspective. So everything’s O.K. in black America.”

Not that the initiatives Ms. O’Brien spotlights aren’t worthy. Mr. Rock’s wife, Malaak Compton-Rock, certainly did a fine thing last year by taking 30 Bushwick youngsters to South Africa and turning the tables on them: instead of being on the receiving end of assistance, they were on the giving end, visiting families affected by AIDS. But Ms. O’Brien undercuts any heft this and other segments might build up by shamelessly injecting herself into the proceedings. Do we really need to see her having a heart-to-heart with one of the Bushwick children and personally wiping the girl’s tears?

The creep of this kind of it’s-really-about-me journalism appears to be inexorable, but it costs “Black in America 2” some credibility. So does Ms. O’Brien’s interviewing. It used to be that the old reporter’s trick of leading interview subjects to say what you want them to say would be disguised by deft editing. Not here, as we see in a segment in which Ms. O’Brien talks to Everett Highbaugh about a client in his inmate-assistance program in Oakland, Calif., who is in danger of backsliding:
Ms. O’Brien: “He doesn’t have a tight plan.”
Mr. Highbaugh: “He doesn’t have a real tight plan.”
Ms. O’Brien: “And that worries you.”
Mr. Highbaugh: “And that worries me.”
Ms. O’Brien: “He’s got a general, vague plan.”
Mr. Highbaugh: “A general, vague plan. That just worries me.”
So come to this program for some heartening examples of people who are responsible for relatively small efforts against big problems. But expect only one revelation: that the “Black in America” concept needs to be put out of its misery. When poor urban children are crammed under the same umbrella as rich debutantes, as they are here, it’s a good sign that you have an artificial construct. Being black, or anything else, in America is far more complicated than one demographic characteristic.

BLACK IN AMERICA 2
CNN, Wednesday night at 9, Eastern and Pacific times; 8, Central time. Thursday night at 8, Eastern and Pacific times; 7, Central time.
Produced by CNN Productions. Soledad O’Brien, anchor and special correspondent; Mark Nelson, vice president and senior executive producer; Jeffery Reid, executive producer; Jody Gottlieb, executive director.

Houska Castle

Houska Castle

If a gateway to Hell existed, where would it be located? What or who would guard it? Legend states Houska Castle in the Czech Republic was that place. Built by Ottokar II of Bohemia during his reign (1253-1278), it sits surrounded by sandstone mountains where there was no source of water, protection or land view and away from trade paths.

It’s defense mechanism was turned to the inside. No stairs led to the first floor. Many windows seen from the outside have no rooms behind them. It remained in the hands of the aristocracy until 1924. It was turned from a Gothic castle into a Renaissance chateau in the 16th Century.

During WWII, Nazis took over the castle and made it their headquarters until the end of the war.
The chapel was built over a hole or bottomless well. This well was believed to be the gateway to Hell. Locals wanted to fill it with stones to keep the evil spirits at bay but was unsuccessful. They were forced to cover it with stone plates and build the chapel. Its walls remain moist even during droughts. The walls are covered with ancient drawings of dragons being slain and a left-handed archer (the only known picture). It is even believed non-human remains are buried in the Houska Castle cellar killed by its defenders.

A journey for change

A journey for change

Program Note: In CNN’s Black in America 2, Soledad O’Brien reports on the innovative and unexpected ways people are transforming the black experience by confronting the most difficult issues facing their community. Tune in on Wednesday, July 22 at 9 p.m. and Thursday, July 23 at 8 p.m..

Soledad O’Brien jokes with several of the Journey for Change participants. Left to right: Steven Pallares, Zuliana Burnett, Sayris Pallares, Sadara Lewis, Queen Clyde, Mariah Ralph, Soledad O’Brien, Imaan Williams, Yolaine Calixte, Jenee Lawson, Sydney Smart, Daisa Carr. Joshua Hall on the floor.
Soledad O’BrienCNN Anchor and Special Correspondent
Over the past year, 30 kids from the Bushwick Salvation Army Community Center have traveled to South African shantytowns, hosted a car wash to raise money for a burn victim, helped rebuild around New Orleans and cleaned up on the streets of Brooklyn.
They are all a part of Journey for Change, a group started by Malaak Compton-Rock to empower children who are growing up in neighborhoods rife with crime and poverty. Malaak, an activist who also happens to be the wife of comedian Chris Rock, believes these kids often limit their dreams. Her dream is to turn them into global citizens who believe in themselves and think big!
I traveled with these amazing young people, ages 12 to 16, eight thousand miles to Johannesburg, South Africa, and I have watched them as they changed and grew as a result of the experience. Their year-long journey will be a part of Black in America 2 on CNN July 22 at 9p and July 23 at 8p. We also continue to post additional material from the trip at CNN.com/BlackinAmerica. Below are blogs from three of the children: Imaan, Joshua and Sydney. I asked them to explain how the South African trip changed them.
Imaan Williams, 12
The trip to South Africa has changed my whole life. I see things in a different way than I did before. Before I went to South Africa I would think everything should be about me and nobody else. I had my moments where I would think to myself, and say in my head, ‘why did God put me on this earth and if it is supposed to make me feel like nothing.’ Then, I was taken on the trip to South Africa and my whole opinion of life changed. I realized God did have a plan for me and it was a good one too. The trip showed me that even though life has its ups and downs, you have to keep on moving on. I saw kids less fortunate than me and I had all these emotions running through me: SAD, MAD, HAPPY, ANGRY, JOYFUL, and most of all PRIVILEGED. God has truly blessed me with this opportunity and I hope another one comes soon. Peace and Love.
Joshua Hall, 15
Journey for Change has changed my life in so many ways. I have had the opportunity to serve others globally and here at home. It’s interesting to see what we consider as a need is a luxury in other parts of the world. I had the opportunity to go to South Africa and I was overwhelmed with the needs of so many people. I realized that we take a lot of things for granted: clean running water, a toothbrush, toilet paper, and even my own room! It was a real “eye opener,” and so hard to leave knowing there was so much more that needs to be done.
As Journey for Change Global Ambassadors our year of service took us to South Africa for two weeks of service, New Orleans to help build a new home for a Hurricane Katrina victims, the U.S. House of Representatives to meet with Rep. Maxine Waters, the United Nations to see how humanitarian efforts are being handled globally, a visit to CNN to see first hand how things were handled behind the scenes, college tours to Morehouse College, Howard University and much more. None of this would have been possible without Ms. Malaak Compton-Rock (‘Auntie’). I am grateful for the love and time she spends with us. She always tells us “service is the rent we pay for living”.
It truly has been a journey that changed me!!
Sydney Smart, 13
The Journey for Change trip to South Africa has empowered me to make better decisions for my life. Before I joined the program, my behavior was very selfish and ungrateful, but after those two amazing weeks in South Africa my world was turned upside down and I have improved. When I saw the horrific ways people lived in Diepsloot and Soweto, I was shocked. Many families didn’t have food and couldn’t afford their medical expenses. And a lot of kids were abandoned because their mothers died of AIDS and that was so sad. But to see how happy their faces were to see us because they knew we cared, changed all of my perspectives on: God, life and love and my whole Journey for Change. After that life-changing trip, I have been volunteering a lot for the community and I have a better attitude toward decision making, school, and family.

Can Malware Help Erin Andrews?
ESPN reporter Erin Andrews got screwed. Bigtime. Nude spy video on the Internet screwed.
But in an ironic twist, malware distribution may play an unexpected role in somewhat lessening the sting of the incident. At least a little.
To anyone who has followed her career as I have as a sports addict, and admittedly not always for her reporting talents alone, the breaking of the peephole video claiming to be Ms. Andrews unclothed, a contention that the ESPN sideline specialist has apparently confirmed, is striking for a number of reasons.
Andrews, the daughter of an Emmy-winning television news reporter, is gorgeous.
There's just no way around it. And like some other very attractive female sports reporters before her, including ESPN colleagues Colleen Dominguez and Sam Ryan, it's almost seemed at some points that she's almost had to work harder and conduct herself a lot more seriously than some of her less eye-catching peers, to downplay her looks a bit, just because... well, it's hard to miss on TV that she's beautiful. And that doesn't always lend credibility. Especially on ESPN.
Seems ridiculous right? But as much as being good looking can help get you onto TV, it can become a major issue if you're a woman covering something and your target audience is, even in this day of worldwide sports mania, still mostly made up of guys.
Especially if you're trying to be taken very seriously as a reporter whilst covering a lot of men's athletics, which undoubtedly she has all around.
There's a certain extra mile than any woman covering men's sports still needs to go to be widely accepted as nothing more than a pretty smile even in this era of near-ubiquitous women's appearances in sports reporting. (How many hotel rooms have I seen Linda Cohn in on a business trip? More than Stuart Scott? Maybe!)
And to anyone who has been watching, Andrews has clearly been running it; doggedly in fact, and for a few years now - covering everything from the NHL playoffs to the National Spelling Bee and almost everything in between.
While she has caught the occasional comment from male counterparts about an outfit or two they saw as too flashy, and become a clearly reluctant frat boy Internet idol, Andrews has appeared only more driven to deflect the pretty girl stamp and build her on-camera credentials.
Off-camera, she's been on the "B.S. Report" podcast with ESPN's "Sports Guy" Bill Simmons and talked this whole issue through at length a couple of times - and actually come off as pretty cool about the whole double-edged sword of it all. Accepting, good humored.
So when some perverted voyeur snuck a tiny camera through her hotel room door, filmed her undressed, then posted it for the world to see on the Web, you had to feel nothing but bad for Ms. Andrews. Here's someone whose been trying pretty hard not to be totally objectified, being reduced to a pornographic download. Humiliating must not even begin to describe it. Technology can be a very dangerous thing.
But at the same time, while information technology and its misuse has surely become the bane of Andrews' existence overnight, in an ironic twist, the move by malware distributors to immediately tap into the certain massive demand for downloads of the peephole video has actually helped put a clamp on people's ability to see it.
I'm not sure how many people who want to view the video will take note, but a good number of the links that they're pulling up promising copies of the download, and the downloads themselves, currently feature malware infections.
A video clip talking about that very phenomenon, produced by Sophos good guy researcher Graham Cluley, is currently one of the top video results that's showing up on Google if you search videos under her name. Many other copies of the video appear to have been pulled from mainstream sharing sites such as YouTube.
Trying to see the thing has certainly become a bit of a crapshoot. Maybe you get to see her; maybe your personal information gets stolen. Is it worth the risk to find out? At least now people have to ask themselves before clicking through.
For those who don't follow the advice and click anyway, and get infected, well, they obviously deserve it, and though it likely doesn't give Ms. Andrews' family must respite, there's a certain street justice aspect to it all.
Uber-hot TV persona gets unauthorized nude pics posted online, but before it gets too far out of the cage the response from malware schemers to capitalize on the torrent of interest in said vid likely slows the very files' propagation.
User driven multimedia content is somehow policed by the very people trying hardest take advantage of it to do wrong.
I think the Internet is about to cave in on itself.
But in this case, that's apparently for the better.

1969 Fast Facts: Apollo 11's Historic Moon Landing

1969 Fast Facts: Apollo 11's Historic Moon Landing

U.S. astronauts landed on the Moon on July 20, 1969.
• An estimated half billion television viewers--at that time, the largest audience ever-watched.
• Neil Armstrong descended from the lunar module and became the first person to walk on the moon.

• As Armstrong walked on the moon he declared "That's one small step for a man, one giant leap for mankind."
• A massive three-stage Saturn V booster rocket launched Apollo 11 on its lunar mission on July 16, 1969.

• After orbiting the earth for several hours, the third stage of the Saturn rocket was fired, sending Apollo 11 toward the moon.
• The spacecraft, which now consisted of a command and service module (CSM) and a lunar module (LM), orbited the moon for a day before the LM, with Armstrong and Air Force Colonel Edwin (Buzz) Aldrin on board, was separated from the CSM and began its descent to the moon.

• Air Force Lieutenant Colonel Michael Collins, the CSM pilot, remained in lunar orbit.
• The LM, dubbed "Eagle," touched down on the moon's surface on July 20.
• About 6 hours later, Armstrong and Aldrin donned their spacesuits and exited the LM.
• After practicing walking on the moon the astronauts deployed various equipment for scientific experiments.
• The astronauts collected about 50 pounds of lunar rocks and soil. T
• Television cameras that the astronauts had mounted on the moon's surface broadcast live images of their activities to viewers around the world.
• Following their 2.5 hour moonwalk, Armstrong and Aldrin blasted off from the moon on July 21, leaving behind a U.S. flag and a plaque bearing the inscription: "Here men from the planet Earth first set foot upon the moon. July 1969 A.D. We came in peace for all mankind."
• In a lunar orbit rendezvous, Armstrong and Aldrin joined Collins in the CSM and set the LM adrift in space.

• The Apollo 11 crew safely splashed down in the Pacific Ocean on July 24.
• U.S astronauts would return the moon's surface five more times through December 1972

UFC Lightweight Champ B.J. Penn the Latest to Jump Out of a Pool

UFC Lightweight Champ B.J. Penn the Latest to Jump Out of a Pool

http://mma.fanhouse.com/2009/07/18/ufc-lightweight-champ-b-j-penn-the-latest-to-jump-out-of-a-pool/

I have no idea how the ability to stand in three feet of water and do a vertical jump out of a pool became such a rite of passage for professional athletes, but UFC lightweight champion BJ Penn is the latest to do it, allegedly becoming only the third person in the world with the ability, in a video he posted to his official YouTube channel

Chicago Bears rookie Jarron Gilbert was the first to accomplish the feat, making the jump out of a pool and posting a video that has now been viewed more than 1 million times on YouTube. Then another NFL rookie, Jason Williams of the Cowboys, claimed on Twitter that he could do it, too. I guess those are the two other people whose exclusive company Penn has joined. (Yet another NFL rookie, Redskins receiver Keith Eloi, then posted a video of himself jumping into a truck, claiming that his feat was more difficult than jumping out of a pool.)
tweetmeme_source = 'FanHouse';

This whole phenomenon of athletes posting their feats on YouTube is bizarre, but it's also pretty cool. Penn is undeniably a great athlete, and seeing him do things that he can do and few other people can is exactly what athletes should be using their YouTube channels for. Maybe Penn's next opponent, Kenny Florian, can come up with something to top this.

Design Star Season 4 premieres tonight with new judges and new rules

Design Star Season 4 premieres tonight with new judges and new rules

http://www.examiner.com/x-5967-Nashville-Entertainment-Examiner~y2009m7d19-Design-Star-Season-4-premieres-tonight-with-new-judges-and-new-rules

HGTV's reality competition, Design Star returns for a fourth season tonight, but things aren't the same as they used to be. While host Clive Pearse and judge Vern Yip have returned for another season, gone are judges Cynthia Rowley and Martha McCully. Joining Vern at the judges podium are fellow HGTV stars Genevieve Gorder, host the network's Dear Genevieve and Candice Olsen, host and designer of Divine Design. Also gone this season, viewer input. In previous years, the ultimate winner, who will become host of their very own HGTV series, was determined by the viewer. This season, the winner will be determined solely by the judges.
Ten contestants have been selected to participate this season, which takes place in LA. Tonight's pilot episode will also introduce three other hopefuls, with only one being chosen to join in the competition. Here's a quick look at the designers.
Amy Sklar, age 40, hails from Los Angeles. She is owner and principal designer at Amy Sklar Design. According to her official bio, a background in stand-up comedy, design and public relations have played a part in preparing her to effectively communicated her design ideas. An interesting note, Amy sites the chance to renovate and decorate the original Grey Gardens her dream design project.

Our second 40 year old contestant is Antonio Ballatore. If the pilot episode is any indication, his cocky attitude might be just what the judges are looking for. The much-inked set designer also hails from Los Angeles. His favorite movie is The Jerk and his favorite TV show, Rock of Love. He cites the F-word as a word or phrase he says too often. Kissing up to new judge Olsen, Ballatore claims Divine Design is his favorite HGTV series. He just might be what the network needs to tarnish their goody goody image.

Dan Vickery, a 27 year old bartender from Portland who describes his design style a combination of hip and contemporary history. The 6'3" design hopeful sites his grandmother as his design icon. Of his favorites, he enjoys comfort food, the color blue and lists alternative, pop, hip hop and country music as favorites. His favorite HGTV show, Design Star. He's pretty to look at, but HGTV already has former Design Star winner, David Bromstead.
Dallas native Jany Lee is a 35 year old interior decorator with a BA in economics from Queens University in Ontario. On why she should be the next Design Star she says, "My passion for interior design can be reflected in the beautiful rooms that I create, and I can offer fresh and inspiring decor ideas that anyone can do at home." When asked to describe her design style in four words, Jany cited classic contemporary and glamorous. For some reason she reminds me of a less annoying Kim Myles, winner of Design Star Season Two.
Thirty-three year old Sarasota designer, Jason Champion has the best name for the next Design Star. I can see it now, Design Like a Champion. On why he should win, "I bring a different combination of funny personality with design talent." He draws inspiration from everywhere, including "sand under your feet to snow on the mountains." He gets my vote for best favorites, citing Metallic as his favorite color, lounge music as his favorite tunes, the self-serving titled We Are the Champions as his favorite song and Chelsea Lately among his fav TV shows.
Yet another 33-year-old, Jen Guerin from San Diego. Jen is one of only 151 color consultants in the US who is certified by the International Association of Color Consultation. Her strategy for winning includes distracting the competition with laughter. Her design icons are Vivienne Westwood and Jonathan Adler. She describes her design style as 60s modern, nostalgic and baroque. When asked her favorite TV show, Jen said, "Sorry, I cut off my cable a year ago so I would be more creative." The judges might laugh at that, but we all know they won't like it.
Beverly Hills interior designer, Lonnie Paul, when asked about her age said, "A woman who will tell you her age will tell you anything." She kinda slams the network's current programming by saying if she wins Design Star, her "elegant and simple design sensibility will bring an original and sophisticated point of view to HGTV." Softening the blow, she adds, "And I am a lot of fun!" Her design icon is Phillipe Stark. I had hear of Stark, but wasn't that familiar with him. After reading about him on his official site, I completely understand why a woman of a certain age from Beverly Hills would aspire to be like him. Too bad Martha Stewart won't be doing another season of her Apprentice spinoff.
NataLee Callahan, a 30 year old interior decorator from Salt Lake City is cool and funky and my favorite, based solely on the first episode. She is the epitome of what HGTV is, fun, cool and seemingly nice. I also like the fact that she says winning her own show on HGTV would be her ultimate dream job. She does proceed to lay it on a bit thick when she names Candice Olson as her favorite designer and Olson's Divine Design as her favorite HGTV show. I mean, come on, one or the other, not both.
Nathan Galui, 25, is the youngest of the contestants. Galui is from Palm Beach Gardens, Florida and holds a BS in interior design from Drexel University in Philly. WIth design and construction talents being listed as reasons why he should win, Galui describes his style as urban, modern, eclectic and rustic. His dream project, to build and design his own dream home.
The tenth contestant is Tashica Morgan, a 29 year old design coordinator for Ethan Allen from Bowie, Maryland. Taschica holds a Bachelor's in pre-law and is currently working on a master's in interior design. Going against her fellow suck-ups, Tashica boldly named Sheila Bridges as one of her design icons. Astute home makeover viewers will recognize Bridges for her four seasons as host of Sheila Bridges' Designer Living on rival Fine Living Network.

As for the three semi-finalist, CLICK HERE to check them out in action. My vote goes to Alissa Sutton.
Season Four of Design Star premieres tonight on HGTV at 10/9

Leave Erin Andrews alone!

http://www.opensports.com/community/user/blog_entry/121/3d83b73d-6c2d-46cf-9c02-9b5e94fae6f8

Leave Erin Andrews alone!

http://fantasy-images.foxsports.com/images/dynamic_images/images/0333/2680/52042.jpg

If I had a cheap web cam, some eyeliner, blond hair dye and the ability to fake cry, that statement may be more powerful. But seriously, I give Erin Andrews all the credit in the world for being able to put up with all the crap she has to deal with as a female in a male-dominated industry (i.e. those who work in it and those who watch it).

As my colleague Chris Chester wrote about earlier, the blogosphere has been abuzz about a nude video of the most talked about individual in the world of sports blogs. Well, apparently it’s real – as proven by a statement released by Ms. Andrews through her lawyers.
According to the statement, the video was acquired “without her knowledge or content.” So it looks like someone did secretly videotape her while she was in a hotel room.

Other blogs have dug much deeper into the situation, so I’m sure you’ll easily find more information on the topic.I will say, though, that I hope they find whoever filmed her – illegally – and make an example of him or her (it’s most likely a “him,” but you never know). This whole obsession with Erin Andrews has gone far enough.
Yes, she’s very good looking.
Yes, she legitimately knows sports.
Yes, I keep a napkin she discarded at a Miami-Florida State in a resalable plastic bag next to my bed.
But do we really have to go out of our way and risk a world of hurt – like this person is definitely going to experience with ESPN lawyers backing her – just to see her naked? We have the Internet at our disposal where we can find literally millions of pictures of amazing-looking naked women. And they’re not only free, but they come with absolutely no legal consequence.

3 U.S. Soldiers Die in Attack at a Base in Southern Iraq

3 U.S. Soldiers Die in Attack at a Base in Southern Iraq

By TIMOTHY WILLIAMS
Published: July 17, 2009
BAGHDAD — Three American soldiers were killed after insurgents fired mortar rounds into a United States military base in southern Iraq, an area of the country that has been largely free of the violence that continues to plague the northern part of the country.
The attack occurred Thursday evening, but the American military did not report it until Friday. The identities of the soldiers have not yet been released.
Though American combat forces withdrew from Iraq’s cities on June 30, thousands of troops remain stationed at bases outside urban areas.
The base struck by mortar rounds on Thursday, Contingency Operating Base Basra, is about 20 miles outside Basra, Iraq’s second largest city.
Basra Province, which lies at the heart of Iraq’s oil industry, was controlled by British troops until this spring, when they withdrew and turned over their bases to American soldiers.
Southern Iraq has been perhaps the most peaceful part of the country for the past year and a half, after Iraqi Army troops carried out a military campaign against Shiite militias there in the spring of 2008.
On Friday, the house of Bahjat Sada’a Khwam, an Awakening Council leader in the western city of Falluja, was bombed. Two children were killed, and Mr. Khwam and 10 family members were badly wounded, Iraqi security officials said.
Awakening Councils are neighborhood-based groups of Sunnis, many of them former insurgents, who are now paid by the Iraqi government. They are credited, along with the increase in American troops, with helping to diminish violence in Iraq.
Their leaders are often targets of Al Qaeda in Mesopotamia, a homegrown extremist group believed by American intelligence to have foreign leadership. Al Qaeda regards Awakening Council members as traitors.
Also on Friday, six separate attacks — three car bombs and three improvised explosive devices — killed one Shiite pilgrim and wounded 40 others in Baghdad districts, according to Iraqi security forces.
But in the neighborhood of Adhamiya, there was a glimmer of hope as thousands of Shiite pilgrims walked peacefully through what was once a stronghold of Al Qaeda in Mesopotamia and other Sunni extremist groups.
The pilgrims were taking part in the annual commemoration of the death of the eighth-century Imam Musa al-Kadhim by visiting the gold-domed shrine in Kadhimiya, the Shiite neighborhood just across the Tigris River.
Since Iraq’s sectarian warfare began in 2006, the Shiite pilgrims have generally avoided walking through Adhamiya to the shrine out of fear that they would be killed. The alternative route added more than two hours to the journey, often undertaken in sweltering heat and lasting several days.
But this year, the Iraqi Army closed Ras Hawash Street, Adhamiya’s main road, to vehicle traffic so that the pilgrims could walk through the district without fear of car bombs.
Many of the Sunni residents of the neighborhood greeted the pilgrims with cups of cold water or pitched tents for them to rest out of the hot sun.
“The Safina people welcome the pilgrims of Imam Kadhim,” read one large banner, referring to a neighborhood where, two years ago, Shiites faced death had they been stopped at a Sunni extremists’ checkpoint.
“No one would have believed this would be happening,” said Omar Nazhat, 35, who was melting blocks of ice in a large bucket to make cold water for passers-by. “People have started to heal. People want to live their lives without violence. They just want to live. They don’t want sectarian warfare.”
Tariq Abas, 57, a Shiite pilgrim who was walking the 10 miles from his home to the shrine, said that Friday was his first time in Adhamiya since 2005. That year some 1,000 Shiite pilgrims walking to the shrine on a bridge connecting Adhamiya and Kadhimiya died after being trampled or jumping into the Tigris River when a rumor spread that a suicide bomber was among them.
“It’s a very beautiful feeling,” Mr. Abas said about being welcomed by Sunnis. “It makes me feel proud. I’m proud of myself and I’m proud of the people of this area.”
Amir A. al-Obeidi, Mohammed Hussein and an Iraqi employee of The New York Times contributed reporting.

President Barack Obama speaks during the NAACP 100th Anniversary convention in New York.
Take our Poll
Civil Rights Milestones
Does the election of President Obama mark the end of the Civil Rights Movement of the 1960s, or simply serve at it's greatest victory?

It is not the end as long as racism plagues society.
His election marks the end of one chapter, and the beginning of another.

President Obama, in a rousing address to the NAACP Thursday night, paid tribute to the civil rights pioneers who made his historic presidency possible and declared the legacy of discrimination "must not stand."
"Because ordinary people made the civil rights movement their own, I made a trip to Springfield [Ill.] a couple years ago - where Lincoln once lived, and race riots once raged - and began the journey that has led me here tonight as the 44th President of the United States of America," Obama said to thunderous applause from the adoring crowd.

"I'm here to say thank you to those pioneers and thank you to the NAACP," he said.
His gratitude was reflected in a speech delivered with a passion and soaring oratory not seen or heard since last year's campaign. He recalled his visit just last week to Cape Coast Castle in Ghana, where slaves were assembled and put on ships for the Americas.
"I was reminded of all the pain and all the hardships, all the injustices and all the indignities on the voyage from slavery to freedom," Obama said.
"But I was also reminded of something else. I was reminded that no matter how bitter the rod or how stony the road, we have persevered."

Though he has sat in the Oval Office now for nearly six months, the triumphant appearance of the nation's first black President before the 100th anniversary convention of the NAACP made for a memorable evening.
"Our chests were bursting out in front of us with the pride to see the son of the civil rights struggle stand in this auditorium as the leader of the free world," said NAACP vice chair Roslyn Brock. Aged civil rights veterans were in tears.
Rose Mayes, 65, a delegate from California, likened it to "an out-of-body experience" because she never thought she'd live long enough to see an African-American in the Oval Office.
But the euphoria of his election has also given way to a sense of restlessness by some civil rights activists who feel Obama has not moved their causes of today to the top of his agenda.
The President declared "there's probably never been less discrimination in America than there is today." Still, he said, "make no mistake: the pain of discrimination is still felt in America."
NAACP President Benjamin Jealous said he agreed that discrimination is at a historic low - "and I agree with him that the fight isn't done yet."
Thelma James, a delegate from Wallace, N.C., who called this years's convention the most special of the 31 she has attended, said, "There is still a great deal of work to do." Team USA Softball: Bowie Memories

If there is one plus to being single and having no social life, it's that I can sit home and watch the U.S. Softball team play in non-Olympic tournaments --- of course, Olympic softball no longer exists.

Right now, the United States is leading the Netherlands, 5-2, in the top of the fifth inning. The Americans are playing in the KFC World Cup of Softball. Team USA recently won the Canada Cup by going 12-0 during the tournament in Bristish Columbia.

Jennie Finch is pitching her second inning now. Not only is she easy to look at, but Finch was incredibly gracious with her time last May when Team USA strolled through Bowie as part of its Bound4Beijing tour, essentially a tune-up for the Olympics.

Your sports editor was the only member of the media to show up for Media Day at a Bowie hotel. I also interviewed Cat Osterman and Monica Abbott. The Americans won the silver medal at last year's Olympics.

I still have the pen that Finch used to sign autographs after their game last May at Prince George's Stadium. And after the fifth, Finch has struck out five batters in just two innings of work.

God bless America!!

New footage shows Michael Jackson Pepsi Commercial Hair on Fire

New unreleased footage taken in 1984 shows the fateful moment that Michael Jackson’s hair caught fire during the filming of a Pepsi commercial.

The now infamous incident which put Michael Jackson in hospital for treatment for serious burns to his head, is often credited as the point at which Jackson started acting strangely, from bleaching his skin white, through to a full range of other behavior that earned him the tag “Whacko Jacko.”

The new footage obtained by UsWeekly shows Jackson from behind: the first scene shows Jackson performing the first take for the commercial and the pyrotechnics being fired safely. The second scene shows the fateful sixth take with the pyrotechnics going off early and Jackson’s hair catching fire, and the delay between the fire starting and being put out.

The following Michael Jackson Pepsi Commercial Hair on Fire video is disturbing and may not be suitable for younger views.
